Where the Journey Begins...

Well hello literary world!! Ever since I was young, I've used writing as a way to express myself (because I've always had way too much to say and not enough time in the day lol). I'm an educator by nature and profession, a creative, and family woman. I'm new to the blogging arena, but I'd love to share my journey to children's literature with you and look forward to sharing my self-publishing journey as well. So come along and soar with me, to place where dreams can be, transformed into reality (hopefully you caught the catchy little rhyme there lol).

Journal writing while out in a Georgetown cafe.
It all started with a small journal/diary and a whole lot of things to say.

PDMS Origin Story

The first book in this self-publishing journey, Please Doesn't Mean Yes, came about through my first few years in education. As teachers, we navigate through teaching so many life lessons to our students. What I noticed in my 2nd and 3rd graders at the time, was an incomplete idea of sharing. I began to talk them through how to handle rejection and how to be courageous enough to express when they didn't want to do something. Now we all know that there is wayyyy more depth than just teaching kids to say no lol. I'll cover some of those other aspects in later blogs.

But I wanted to share this story with kids, teachers, and parents beyond the classes I taught, so I figured, what better way than through a story they could relate to. It was also very important that the book have visual representation of many different cultural backgrounds. Kids being able to connect and see themselves in the lessons and stories we tell allows them to have a sense of ownership to it, and it helps to internalize the intended message. So I hope you enjoy Rylee's journey and can see the implications for future discussions with your kids and/or students.

Follow Along

If you're interested in more ways to utilize the book or lesson it shares, head over to the resources page for instructional resources. This page will be updated along the way to be more robust. I'd also love for you to leave comments about the book or things you'd like to see explored in the future.

Happy reading and I look forward to connecting with you!
